ARE YOU GODLY OR UNGODLY
Text: Psalms 1:1
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of ungodly, nor stand in the path of the sinners, nor sits in the seats of the scornful.”
God does not measure individual blessing by the number of houses he built, the fleet of cars he has, and not by the level of education acquired. But living Godly, putting trust in God, having fellowship with God, fearing (honouring or referencing) God, being obedient to His words, waiting upon God and walking in His ways etc., are part of God’s criteria for measuring our blessing(Psalms 128:1).
To be ungodly (Heb “Rasha”) is doing something morally wrong, actively evil, unjust or generally wicked. Ungodly people are also known or called unrighteous people, and they are not people of blessings but people of curses from God. “The curse of God is upon the house of the wicked, but He blesses the just (righteous)”.(Proverbs 33:3).
Walking in the path of the ungodly and sitting in the seats of the scornful leads to condemnation and God’s judgement. Bible says, “The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth of God in unrighteousness (Romans 1:18). We are not to enter the path of the wicked, and we should not walk in the way of evils to avoid the wrath of God that brings judgement upon people.
God distaste and abhor ungodliness and wickedness because ungodly people are sinners, deceivers, disobedient, boastful, fearful, violent, fierce, alienated from God and blinded. They are also untoward, unthankful, loathsome, glory in sin and hater of light, unmerciful and incontinent. They have been sold out to sin (1 Kings 21:20) and are only mindful of earthly things (Philippians 3:19).
The ungodly people are self-centred. Self is the leading object of all their pursuit and ambitions. They trample upon anyone who stands in the way of their self-pursuit. They are only concerned about their interests and obliviously not about the welfare of others. Their sole ambition is to gratify their lusts and make provision for themselves rather than to please God and help fellow men.
Brethren, the call of this hour is to re-examine ourselves to see if we are Godly or ungodly, righteous or unrighteous. Are you selfish, fearful, violent, and boastful? Do you love sin and earthly things? Do you love darkness more than light, distaste anything that concerns God? Then you need to pray for deliverance from acts of ungodliness. David said, “Search me, o God, and know my heart: try me and know my thoughts (Psalms 139:23).
We, as Christians, need to fervently pray, like David, that God would search us, know our hearts, and see if there is any wicked way in us.
May we all receive the grace to repent of any wickedness that may be found in us in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Stay blessed
